Nepali

Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language. It is spoken by about fourteen million people, of which a very large majority live in Nepal itself: almost twelve million people. The language is also known as Gurkhali, particularly by the Nepalese themselves. This is due to the region’s history and the origins of the language. The Gurkha tribe conquered Nepal in the sixteenth century and brought the language with them. As well as the twelve million speakers in Nepal, an estimated two million speakers live in India. It is the official language in Nepal and in a couple of areas of India.

The script

Nepali is written in Devanagari. This is an Indian script in which various other Indo-Aryan languages including Hindi are also written. The script originated at the end of the twelfth century and is a direct descendant of Brahmi, a script that was being used three centuries before the birth of Christ. The syllabic script is very difficult to understand for people who do not speak an Indo-Aryan language as natives.
