Azerbaijani is one of the Turkic languages and is also called Azeri. It possesses a strong similarity to Turkish. As the current official language of Azerbaijan, it’s also spoken by minorities in Iran and many post-Soviet states. The language is split into two parts: North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani.
Records show that Azerbaijani must have developed in approximately the 11th century. The Ottoman Empire arose around the same time. This explains the many similarities shared by these languages. In light of the ongoing border conflicts with Russia and the later occupation by the Russian military, the language began to change. The Russian occupants relocated a large portion of the population. As a result, the country was divided into North and South.Instant quote
The North changed under the strong influence of the Russian occupation forces. Among other things, the Cyrillic alphabet was officially instituted there.
The South, however, experienced more of a Persian influence, so the alphabet was also impacted by Persian. Thus, North and South Azerbaijani came to be divided. Despite strong dissent from Russia, the Cyrillic alphabet was officially abolished. Since that time, Latin script has been required for official correspondence.Instant quote
Azerbaijani was originally written using the Persian alphabet, which is very similar to that of the Ottoman Turkish language. With the introduction of the standardized Turkish alphabet, they switched over to Latin characters. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan became one of the first Turkic countries in the territory of the former Soviet Union to introduce the Western alphabet.
