Professional Translations into and from the Kurdish Language (Badini)

The Kurdish language is Indo-European in origin and is the official language of Iraq and the autonomous region of Kurdistan. It’s also spoken in parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, areas of Iran, areas of Armenia, and in Lebanon. It’s estimated that approximately 30 million people speak the language.

Three dialect groups have emerged from the Kurdish language: Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji), Central Kurdish (Sorani) and Southern Kurdish (Pehlewani). Kurmanji or Badini is the most widespread Kurdish language. Therefore, translations into Kurdish, and specifically into North-Kurdish, are increasingly in demand.

Kurdish Dialects

Northern Kurdish or Kurmanji is the most widespread dialect, with nearly 10 million people speaking the language. Some of them live in Russia and Armenia.

Kurmanji has used the Kurdish Latin alphabet since World War II, and it has Turkish and Arabic loanwords in its vocabulary.

Kurmanji can be divided into more than a dozen sub-dialects. Central Kurdish or Sorani is spoken by about 10 million people in Kurdistan and western Iran. To communicate in writing, these people use a special font, which consists of Arabic letters and Persian characters.

Sorani has 11 dialects. Southern Kurdish is the oldest dialect. About 4 million people in western Iran, the eastern part of Northern Iraq, and the Iuric areas speak Southern Kurdish, which is very strongly influenced by Persian.

Southern Kurdish is marked by numerous idiosyncrasies and peculiarities and is subdivided into only two dialects.

History of Kurdish

The history of the Kurdish language is unknown. This applies particularly to the pre-Islamic period. The first records in the Kurdish language date back to the early Middle Ages. During that time, famous poets wrote numerous poems in Kurdish, thus raising its status to a literary language.

History of Survival

At the beginning of the last century, many governments attempted to assimilate the Kurdish-speaking population by eliminating the Kurdish language. In Turkey, for example, this led to repressive actions, which resulted in many people losing their first language. A ban was imposed on publications in the Kurdish language. The authorities prohibited speeches in Kurdish in Parliament and school instruction. Publishing of text in the Kurdish language is still prohibited in Syria.

Modern Kurdish uses three font and script systems: Northern Kurdish, Cyrillic, and Central Kurdish, which developed based on the dominant use in three different settlement areas.
