The history of the Valencian Language

The Valencian Language is a form of Catalan that has noticeably strong ties to French, Italian, and, of course, Spanish. It’s spoken mainly within the Valencian community where it’s considered an official language along with Spanish.

Catalan words are found in Latin documents as early as the 9th century, while the term “valenciano” makes its first appearance in the 15th century. Many still argue that Valencian should be considered its own language. Yet, because vocabulary and pronunciation vary from place to place, dissociating Valencian from Catalan is impossible.
